Guardamar del Segura / Costa Blanca Söder

Guardamar del Segura

A Mediterranean resort, known for its 11 kilometres of fine sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, crystal clear see and beautiful landscape coupled with the scent of pine. It is a municipality of the province of Alicante located at the mouth of the river Segura and near two beautiful pink and blue salt lakes.

Here you will be surrounded by unusual natural beauty spots, as Guardamar is also well-known for its large forest with pine, eucalyptus, cypress and palm trees. The forest was originally planted to shelter town from sandstorms.

Historically it’s an area of fishermen and farmers. The town of Guardamar del Segura with a population of just over 11,000 has historically played the role of guardian of the river Segura. Nowdays it’s a popular resort for families and couples who are looking for a relaxing holiday with a Spanish feel.

Nature & Parks

Reina Sofia Park. (Avenida dels Pins, 03140) A hidden gem is great for relaxing, chilling, admiring wildlife: the birds, peacocks, red squirrels and turtles. It has fountains, lakes and woods to explore.
Dunes bring a lot of beauty to the cost. They are stretched from the Pinet beach, by the Santa Pola salt lakes, up to the Segura river. You can enjoy a longer family walk, through the entire 6.2 kms of dunes.
Wonderful sand dunes and pine trees of the Alfonso Park connect the magnificent town to the equally stunning marina and also provides some of the best walking and cycling routes.

Beaches

Montcayo Beach. One of the best beaches in Spain. The long sandy beach has consistently won the coveted Blue flag for its hygiene and cleanliness
Playa El Campo Lovely clean Beach, which stretches from Guardamar in the north down to La Mata, great with young children, soft sand, slow sloping beach into the sea.
Tossals beach is an unspoiled naturist beach on the north bank of the Segura river.
Vivers beach open, clean beach next to the Segura river to the north and Babilonia beach to the south. It has two kilometres of soft, fine sand and an important dune area with historic, archaeological sites. Its main attraction is the houses of Babylon, which are gorgeous little beachfront villas decorated with amazing tiles
Golden Ortigues beach. Its picture-postcard with fine golden sand and dunes where the sea is a rich and intense shade of blue.

Sports

Guardamar del Segura offers you every imaginable water sport such as sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing, underwater diving, canoeing, and jet skiing.

In the town of Rojales nearby you will find the popular La Marquesa Golf Course.

The shallow waters of Guardamar are perfect for practicing your snorkeling skills.

To see

Torreta de Guardamar, a radio mast. The tallest military structure in the European Union.
Guardamar Castle, built by Arabs to guard the land. Much of it has been destroyed although it is still worth taking a trip for the beautiful views and photos.
Guardamar Museum, located in the Old Town and houses a permanent collection of artefacts found in excavations around the area. The most significant is the Dama de Guardamar sculpture dating from the 6th century

To eat

A type of round sweet pepper called ‘nora’ is grown here and is used generously in the Valencian and Alicante cuisines. Every year Guardamar holds the Semana Gastronomica de la Nyora et Llagosti, which is gastronomic feast where the nora pepper and the local shellfish are parts of the dishes in the best restaurants of this area.

For the best Mediterranean food book the table in El Jardín (Avenida de la Libertad, 64)
Best steak and lobster paella you will find in Chema (Avenida Servantes)
Le Bleu (Calle Azorin,22) - very Spanish restaurant with an elegant touch

To get there

From Alicante airport: Get on to the N338 and then on to the N332. You will be following signs to Santa Pola and Torrevieja. From the N332 take the CV-895 exit into Guardamar del Segura. It will take about 35 minutes.
