Torrevieja / Costa Blanca South

Torrevieja

A Mediterranean pearl of the Costa Blanca region with a unique climate and beautiful beaches. It is situated within the district of Vega Baja and has a population of 105,000 inhabitants. It’s 50 km south away from Alicante to the north, 23 km from Elche to the northwest, and 53 km from Murcia in the southeast.

The name Torrevieja literally means "old tower". Torrevieja as a town dates from the early 18th century when it was a fishing village built around one of the watchtowers that flanks the Costa Blanca coastline. Torrevieja has experienced one of the biggest booms of all the towns on Spanish Coastline. The main industry here is no longer the production of "white gold" (salt) that has characterised the town since Roman times, but is instead expats, tourists and the industries that spring up around them that helps keep Torrevieja flourishing.

Nature

Torrevieja  is a green town. More than half of of its land area is protected and classed as natural reserves.  Two areas have ecological value : The Lagunas de la Mata y  Natural Park with two salt lakes and  Parque del Molino de Aqua Municipal – areas of outstanding natural beauty.

It has 20 km of coastline containing six large beaches - La Mata, Cabo Cervera, Los Locos, El Cura, Los Náufragos and Ferris . The World Health Organisation has declared Torrevieja one of the healthiest places to live on the planet, thanks to its microclimate that is constantly refreshed by the see breezes. All beaches have the blue flag- the European mark for the purity and liveability.

Sports

Snorkling. Do you want to discover Torrevieja’s sea beds? The town has sea beds full of fields of Posidonia, the most important marine ecosystem of the Mediterranean. From the north to the south, you can choose from six snorkelling routes along the Torrevieja coast, have a look and decide which mysterious seabed you would like to discover.

You can play golf at Las Ramblas  (one of the more established courses in the region and is designed to be at ‘one’ with nature), Villamartín and Campoamor ( this course has stunning views from the clubhouse and superb hotel)
