Polop / Costa Blanca North

Polop

The lovely Spanish village of Polop is located inland in the Costa Blanca North in an area known as the Marina Alta. It is a metropolis in the comacra of Marina Baixa in Alicante. It is located to the northeast side of the Alicante province and shares the border with Callosa d’en Sarria aided by the Guadalest river. The ancient capital of the Marina Baixa is today a small village with about 2,000 inhabitants.

Polop’s origins date back to the Iberian culture, as evidenced by the remains found in the territory.

This cute little town is the place discovered by Gabriel Miró, whose house was situated at the beginning of the Guadalest road. Also Oscar Esplá lived here, as did Benjamín Palencia, whose workshop is still maintained.
Polop still has the sharp local colour of the blue and white towns of the Alicante coast. The small but vibrant village is a delight to explore and perfect for a morning or afternoon amble. The area around Polop is very senic, with some fabulous walks and parks areas. Almond and olive trees are among the major crops. Additionally, citrus fruits and persimmons are also among the major part of agriculture.

Beaches

Polop is located about 10 minutes from the cost. So you can spend  the morning exploring the village of Polop, then head to the nearest beach for an afternoon of sun, sea and sand!

Playa de Albir. The beach in Albir is an amazing white pebble beach that stretches all the way to Altea. The seafront promenade, “Paseo de las Estrellas” (Boulevard of the stars) have actors and actresses names inscribed and is linked to the yearly film festival that bring celebrities to town and film viewings outdoor on the beach and in the theatres.
Poniente Beach is a jewel of the Mediterranean. It is an urban beach with a new modern promenade designed by the architect Carlos Ferrater and with a large number of restaurants and bars and clubs to enjoy.
Playa de Levante .This is perhaps one of the best known beaches in Europe. This is an urban beach over 2 km long that runs from Punta Pinet to Punta Canfali. A stretch of fine golden sand bathed by the calm waters of the Mediterranean and sun all day thanks to its south facing orientation.
Cala Finestrat is a beach resort located just three kilometres away from busy Benidorm. The resort offers adequate amenities and facilities, a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops. Cala Finestrat is suitable for families and couples looking for a relaxed beach resort, yet close to lots of activities and amenities should you desire.

Sports

Mount Ponoig is a rough and rocky mountain of steep slopes. Its mild climate and hilly rugged terrain facilitate the practice of climbing, hiking and mountain biking.

Try also Summer Paragliding in Benidorm- just fabulous, great experience the feeling of flying like birds.

There are also several well maintained golf courses around.

Melia Villaitana Golf Club. Melia Villaitana Golf Club is in a privileged location in the tourist coast of Levante. Has two course designed by Jack Nicklaus.
The grass that makes up two courses through their tees, fairways and rough, is the variety of bermuda princess (Cynodon dactilon), which offers all guarantees for a perfect game at all levels.
La Sella golf in Denia, designed by José María Olazábal. It's known internationally for its excellent conditions for playing golf throughout the year. It lies next to Montgó natural park, and is surrounded by Mediterranean woodland and hills. Pine trees, orange trees, olives and almonds add colour to the course.
Altea Club de Golf  was founded in 1974 by Don Luis Campomanes Asumendi as part of the "El Aramo" residential development project, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Bernia mountain range. It is located in the municipal limits of Altea, a Mediterranean village famous for the beauty of its historic quarter and the distinctive natural light.

Things to do

Climb the Castle of  Polop. Polop Castle is of Islamic origin, although they have found remains of the Iberian period as well. It became prominent after the conquest of James I, but remained Muslim until the revolt of Al-Azraq. During the war of germanías, it became well known for the slaughter of the Moors. From here the views are amazing and go on for miles. The beauty of the environment dominated by Mount Ponoig (1,180.) or "the sleeping lion”, mixes in with the agricultural landscapes. As the climb is huge rock surrounding the footing, the views are constantly changing as you move up.
Cementerio Literario de Polop. The cemetary is located at the site where the castle used to be. You can feel the historic presence. Some photographs of Gabriel Miro and some plaques (in Spanish and English) with information are placed at various spots.
Los Chorros Square. This iconic square is located close to the village hall. Some interesting cultural figures lived here, such as Gabriel Miró, Oscar Esplá, Emilio Sagi Barba or Benjamín Palencia.  After enjoying the sights, you must stop to enjoy the 221 fountains whose noise floods the entire square.

The parish church of San Pedro the Apostle was built in the early eighteenth century. Inside there is a large central nave divided into four sections supported by buttresses. The vaults are covered by alabaster windows. Opposite the door is a small chapel, the aurora of Divine in memory of the group who roamed the town singing and collecting alms.

Museo Vehiculos Historicos Valle De Guadalest. This charming and beautifully presented motor museum is a real must. The museum is situated next to a lovely restaurant where you can try Lamb chops, chickens and steaks cooked on fire.
Enjoy the jeep safari with Marco Polo Expeditions from Benidorm. Full day out off riding up high in the mountains with fantastic tour guides, visiting many places on the way, learning all about Costa Blanca and it's past, seeing spectacular views from Guadalest and the waterfalls.
Bodegas Enrique Mendoza. A really interesting informative trip around with a very professional guide. This bodega holds an annual wine festival (apart from their regular wine tasting tours) with not only tastings but displays of barrel making, explanations on wine making, olive oil tasting and a special stall offering wine chocolates (with local company Valor)

Dining out

Crown of India (Calle Major,2 , Altea). This fantastic Indian restaurant really does have it all! Unique setting, quirky but stylish interior, spectacular views from the rooftop terrace and most importantly delicious food served promptly and politely.
For  exceptional food, wine and service choose El Xato (Avenida Iglesia 3, La Nucia) This restaurant deserves to be in Michelin star list. It has one of the largest wine list in this area and all the dishes come with incredible presentations.
Restaurant CA L'angeles (Calle Gabriel Miro 12, Polop) Probably, the best restaurant in Polop. Exquisite interior, like an old house with an open fire, beams, lovely old tiles and full of antiques - very traditional hospitality and surrounds but innovative modern cuisine

To get there

The city is accessible via AP-7 or N-332 from Alicante by taking CV-70 route up to Benidorm.
